This page represents the beginning of a website of short movies (generally 30 to 45 seconds) designed to increase student motivation to READ! Below are a couple of samples.

This one is for me. It's the WA standards for using technology. Probably everyone else has looked at this document, but it's new to me.....

This is the digital book talk site set up by Elizabeth Kahn, librarian at Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy in Jefferson, LA. Kahn won the 2012 AASL's Pathfinder Award. Kahn also writes a blog "Tales from a Loud Librarian" which is full of great musings and includes a link to her book talk site. Although the books are mostly for "teens who love to read" Kahn has lots of ideas to share and is something of an inspiration! Her book talks look pretty easy to make and rather amateur, but engaging none the less

Digital book talks offer Teachers and Librarians a way to engage students on a number of levels. When given the challenge of making a book trailer, students have to really engage with the text to draw out the salient points. They have to think about their audience and present the story in a way that will encourage others to read the book and thus develop their literacy competencies. As required in the Washington State technology standards, making the digital book trailers provides opportunities to use technology in a meaningful way while at the same time, ensuring that students are aware of the need to be ethical in terms of copyright and plagiarism issues
"GLE 1.1.1: Generate ideas and create original works for personal and group expression using a variety of digital tools.
    ...
    ethical behavior." (OSPI Standards)
Having undertaken the research for this topic, I am eager to get back to the classroom/library and start creating book trailers with my students!
You'll find the extended bibliography on the next page.

In first place on my top ten is this Youtube video of Mary Helen Ramming, teacher at Georgia Perimeter College, talking about her Book Trailer Project. Although she is working with older students, the concepts she discusses can be applied to all age groups. Ramming articulated for me the ideas I had been pondering about the power of book talks.

The 2-minute or less "my favorite book" video project is a unique opportunity for kids to promote their favorite books via short videos…and for kids to learn about new titles by watching them. While the program does include a contest component, with prizes donated by national publishers and others, the goal of the program is to harness kids’ excitement for books and share it on the Internet."
